The South African Landscapers Institute (SALI) was formed in 1984 and is a national body with regional offices serving landscape contractors and suppliers.

SALI being a National Body is represented in the Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng regions of South Africa.

The client of a SALI Member is expected to gain high standards of workmanship, plants and materials. The client also has the security of knowing that at the back of the SALI contractor is a responsible Institute.

A SALI member has agreed to comply with the Code of Conduct. Clients of a SALI Member always have recourse to their local SALI regional office where mediation can be facilitated. Contact your SALI regional office for more information: Refer to the contact us page for details.

Constitution

The South African Landscapers Institute (SALI) was formed in 1984 by a group of progressive landscapers who saw the potential of the landscape industry in South Africa. They believed that the true potential could only be realised if landscape contractors showed unity, produced excellent work and projected a professional image.

Mission Statement

To improve the image and standing of the landscape industry and to promote the participation of all role-players in this industry in southern Africa by encouraging training, higher standards, professionalism, ethical conduct and social interaction through regular meetings, conferences, workshops and liaison with business, training and government institutions, statutory bodies, N.G.O’s, employer and employee organisations.

Code Of Ethics

To be proud of my profession as a landscape contractor and the opportunity it affords me to improve our environment and the quality of life of my clients.

To endeavour to improve the standard of our industry by adhering to the Specifications laid down by SALI and by so doing, ensuring clients get increased value.

To make no false claims in advertising my products or services and to display the official logo of the Institute only as long as I am a member in good standing. This logo is an outward sign of quality service and product.

Code Of Conduct

In addition to statutory responsibilities, members must comply with the following:

Terms of business shall be clearly stated to each client by way of a detailed specification and quotation. Quotations concerning replacement of plant losses and liability for defects must be made clear to clients at the time of quoting/tendering.

Sufficient trained staff, adequately supervised, shall be employed to ensure that contracts are carried out in accordance with the specification and normal good practice.

All statutory responsibilities PAYE, Skills Development Levies, UIF, Workmen’s Compensation, Regional Services Levies and/or any other.

Sufficient Public Liability and statutory insurance shall be maintained.

Members shall take full responsibility for the quality of work and conduct of any sub-contractor engaged by them.

Best Practice

SALI has a Code Of Conduct, a Code of Ethics and Specification Documentation through which the standards of landscaping in South are bench-marked.

Marketing

SALI brands and markets its members through ongoing publicity and awareness obtained by means of media coverage, marketing materials, websites, events and advertising. With special focus now being placed on digital marketing for all of our members.

Endorsement

SALI Principal and Selected Supplier Members may use the relevant logo on stationery and advertising material.

Networking

SALI Members have access to current legislation and industry news through e-newsletters, web pages, meetings, special events, workshops and conferences.

Recognition

SALI’s Annual Awards of Excellence offer members the opportunity to be recognised on a national level for excellent work. Entrants receive exposure in various media and award certificates are presented. Digital badges will also be sent to winners to place on their website. Showcasing their association with SALI and the merit of their award status.

Higher Education

SALI supports ongoing training at higher educational levels in close conjunction with UNISA, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, and the Durban University of Technology in KwaZulu-Natal.

Standard Documentation

SALI members receive a set of documentation upon joining which includes, amongst others, work specifications, quotation guidelines, agreement documents. All members are expected to abide by these guidelines in order to ensure ongoing membership

Skills Development

SALI encourages on-going training and works in close conjunction with private accredited training providers who are registered with AGRI-SETA, and who deliver and facilitate horticulture skills between NQF Levels 1 to 4.

Mediation Services

SALI offers its services as mediator between client and contractor.
